So further to my previous post about the appalling cruelty that goes on in the dairy industry I wanted to look further into what dairy does to our health. For me, hands down, just knowing what I know about what cows go through as a result of this industry is enough to avoid dairy products like the plague. But for some, this is not. So maybe if it has some detrimental affects on our health too then that could be the trigger for ditching dairy for good?!
So… I never really questioned milk consumption before, because, like for the majority of us it is something that is a part of our every day life. We are given it from an early age because it “helps us to build healthy bones and teeth.” Our parents drank it just like their parents before them did etc and as a result so do we. I remember being handed a carton of milk every day at first break in primary school like it was an essential part of the curriculum!
Lets think about it logically. We are the ONLY species on the planet to drink the milk from another species. Okay, cats drink cows milk but only because we give it to them. You wouldn’t catch a cat feeding off a cows udder if left to their own devices. Cows produce milk for their calf’s so you would likely assume we would need to be similar, genetically, to a calf in order to benefit from it. But we aren’t though are we?? If you had to drink the milk directly from a cows tit you would find it uncomfortable. In fact I guarantee you wouldn’t! Why? Because it isn’t fucking normal!
This should get you thinking right… so after I gave birth to my boy at some point I jokingly asked my partner if he wanted to try my milk. He recoiled in disgust. Like no way that’s gross and weird. So me, his missus, the idea of drinking my milk is gross. But. You will drink the milk from a cow you’ve never met?? That’s just madness if you ask me. Society tells us that something is normal. “It’s just how it is.” And we all just go along with it like sheep! It’s about time we woke up and started asking questions!
So the science part… There is no evidence to support that dairy is good for bones. Say what???!! In fact it may increase risk of fractures by up to 50%! Countries with lowest rates of dairy and calcium consumption (like those in Africa and Asia) have the lowest rates of osteoporosis. Dairy consumption has even been proven to cause cancer. Research shows that higher intakes of both calcium and dairy products may increase a man’s risk of prostate cancer by 30 to 50 percent. Plus, dairy consumption increases the body’s level of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) — a known cancer promoter. It is full of saturated fat and is linked to heart disease. Dairy causes digestive problems for the 75 percent of people with lactose intolerance. We are lactose intolerant as humans because basically we are not baby cows! Makes sense, duhhh! Which explains why dairy aggravates irritable bowel also. Your body is trying to tell you what your head should already know.
So why have we been taught that dairy is beneficial to our health all this time? For example in the US some of the “experts” who helped create the food pyramid template actually work for the dairy and meat industries, which makes the US Department of agriculture’s recommendations reflect industry interests, not science or OUR best interests. Remember. Money talks. Always. Don’t be fooled into thinking our best interests are always at the heart of everything. This is not true. And it has been proven time and time again.
The dairy industry is just a huge money making scheme and at the heart of it beautiful sentient beings are suffering and ours and our families health are being compromised as a result of it!
